Letitia Wright drew inspiration from the Ethiopian Christian faith. She wore a dress that had embroidered Ethiopian crosses on the bodice and at the hem of the skirt. Another touch requested by Wright was the actress’s favorite Bible scripture, “You are the light of the world,” embroidered on the back of the dress. She was styled by Nigerian-American stylist, Ade Samuel.

Here’s How Lupita Nyong’o Wants To Tell Her Story In Hollywood

The Tribeca Film Festival took place last weekend and a major part of the event was the panel organized by the Time’s Up organization. A number of notable Hollywood actors and #MeToo supporters discussed the issue of sexual harassment in Hollywood.

During one of the events, Lupita Nyong’o, Cynthia Erivo, Amber Tamblyn, and Mira Sorvino spoke about the need to have more women behind the scenes. Nyong’o made it known that teaming up with other women both in front of the camera and behind the scenes is how she wants to tell her story in Hollywood.

Here’s what she said:

‘I know my story best, and I want to be able to tell my story and tell it with people like me who also feel this gaping hole of representation.’

The actress spoke about how she did not see herself represented on television while growing up in Kenya.

‘When I switched on my television when I was younger living in Kenya, there was never anybody that looked like me on there, so seldom. Even when they were black, they were never dark. I was able to relate to the people that I saw, but it wasn’t until I was much older that I started to realize what was missing on that screen, and not seeing myself was causing a self-conscious self-hate that I only grew aware of when I was a teenager and started to recognize my insecurities.’

Former Big Brother Naija Housemate, Soma was not the only one who was elated to be a a part of the show. For many others like Uzoamaka Aniuonoh, who was selected at the Lagos auditions held last year, being on the award-winning show was  a dream come true, not only because of the opportunity and platform it presents for exposure, but the fact that the show has changed many lives and helped young people across the world make better decisions on health, sex and their lives since its inception in 2009.

Speaking during an interview on her role on the show as Leila, Jemima Osunde had this to say: ‘MTV Shuga put me on the map and helped me showcase my talent to the world. The show has done more for my career than any other acting job I have done – both in terms of personal development and recognition.’

Jemima Osunde first appeared in Season 4 of MTV Shuga

Since appearing as a teenager on MTV Shuga Season 4, Jemima has  featured in other Nollywood movies, including a recently released movie New Money, which was directed by MTV Shuga Naija director Tope Oshin.

It is worthy to note that, MTV Shuga alumnus, Lupita Nyong’o, who starred in Season 1 of the show long before she became the darling of Hollywood, appeared in one of the most successful blockbusters of all time, Black Panther- Since it’s premiere, the movie has grossed $909.9m at the box office worldwide in less than three weeks of release.

Apart from Soma and Uzoamaka, other new cast members whose careers will most likely take flight from the show include young talents like Helena Nelson who plays the role of Diana, and Adebukola Oladipupo, who plays the role of Faa.
